Split Yellow Pea Salad
This is a salad by usage rather than ingredients. It is nice as a snack or light meal, perhaps served with raita and a mixed leafy salad, or Kachumbar salad.
Ingredients
3 cups dried split yellow peas (channa dal) 3 tsp whole cumin seeds 4 cloves of garlic, crushed ½ tsp powdered red chilli 1 tsp powdered turmeric ½ cup oil A handful of fresh mint leaves, chopped Options
This might seem like a lot of oil, but it really is needed in this recipe to cook the peas properly. |
Method
Soak the peas in cold water for at least 6 to 8 hours, or overnight. Drain off the soaking water and heat the oil in a saucepan or wok (karhai). Fry all the ingredients except the mint, covered, on a low heat, stirring frequently to avoid sticking. Don’t let the peas cook until they are mushy – they should be tender, with a slight ‘bite’ to them, and each pea separate from the others. It should take about 30 minutes. Turn off the heat, mix in the mint leaves and cover immediately. Serve warm or at room temperature. |
