Spicy Fruit Salad (Fruit Chaat) Recipe
This is a most refreshing dessert on a hot day - use whatever fruits you like or that are seasonal and local for you.
Ingredients Fresh fruit, finely diced (for example, bananas, apples, guavas, apricots, plums, melons, peaches, grapes, mangos) Chaat masala to taste (perhaps 2 tsp in a large bowl of fruit) - see below for recipe. |
Method Fruit salad hardly needs a recipe; the only part that does is the 'chaat masala' spice mix, below. The only distinctive feature of the fruit is that it is cut into very small pieces so that each mouthful has a burst of flavour from each different fruit. Mix everything together well and serve very well chilled. |

The flavours can be an unusual taste for those who have not grown up eating this. The dried mango powder is sour, and combined with the sulphurous-tasting black salt it makes for a peculiar flavour, but one which is increasingly addictive! Black salt is a greyish-pink colour with a smell of sulphur. It contains many minerals as well as salt, but if you can't get it, normal salt is fine.

Ingredients 4 tsp khattai / amchoor (dried mango) powder 2 tsp black salt 2 tsp cumin seeds 2 tsp coriander seeds 1 tsp crushed red chillis 1 tsp carom seeds (ajwain) ½ tsp black peppercorns ½ tsp fennel seeds ½ tsp ground ginger 1 tsp dried mint Options If dried mango powder is not available, you can add some lemon juice to the fruit salad instead to add the sour taste. |
Method Dry roast the whole seed spices and crushed red chillis in a frying pan. When the spices have cooled, grind them together in a spice grinder or pestle and mortar. Add the other ingredients and mix well. This will keep for a month or 2 stored in an airtight jar. |
